Spring Break 2012 – Panama Entry #2
Wednesday morning we traveled by bus about an hour and a
half away to a remote two room school house built high on a hill. There was no electricity, running water or
plumbing. Their bathroom was a three stall outhouse. There were two teachers one of whom also was
the Principal and both lived at the school during the week.
We had a plan to break up into groups and present a variety
of learning experiences mostly in the form of games. The children ranging in
age between 5 – 12 wore uniforms of white shirts and blue pants for boys,
skirts for girls. They were beautiful children and very excited that we were
there. Five or six kids would come to each of our groups and they experienced
what it might feel like to be old by wearing sunglasses with the lenses smeared
with toothpaste, latex gloves on their hands, cotton balls in their ears and
beans in their shoes. They walked around outside over a mini obstacle course.
There was a lot of laughing and giggling. There were other games to learn about
trust and respect. Eduardo was able to provide instruction in Spanish and help
us all understand each other.
