We spent the morning traveling to Las Minas where we spent
the day with local children at their school. The school was about 1.5 hours
away. When we arrived we were surprised to find out that they had not been
informed that we were coming. Despite the surprise, they welcomed us. We
planned several activities for the kids to participate in including nutrition,
teeth brushing, and respect. We set up different stations and the kids were
divided into groups by age and rotated through the stations. The people once
again surpassed my expectations by showing us their kindness and warmth. The
school had no running water, and the water for lunch was carried to the school.
Lunch was made for us by the people and I still don't know how they managed to feed 18 of us on the spure of the moment notice. The children had an outhouse for a bathroom and no air conditioning. Some of
the kids walk an hour and a half to get to the school and were in need of
properly fitting shoes. But…despite their needs, they were happy…
