Ping’s Blog 3 - Experience at the local school of district of las Minas , Panama March 14
We woke up at 5 something to morning to fix our lunch and get all the school supplies for a day of fun at a local school on the hills of Las Minas. It’s about 1 hour north of Chitre, Panana and it’s a more rural setting than Chitre. The school was not expecting our arrival and thus it was a surprise visit for everyone there, especially the children, 25 of them. We had planned a tour de salud for the kids with five different stations for them to explore. I was in the dental section which we educated the kids about the importance of keeping healthy teeth. We delivered the messages by using a funny skit, a tooth brushing song in Spanish, Q & A section, playing games & Simon says, counting their teeth, giving out tooth brushes and tooth paste for them to demonstrate back. The children had enjoyed the program very much and I also had lots of fun interacting with them despite my little Spanish skills. At the end of the program, we were able to talk to children. There were kids that had to walk 1.5 hour each way to go the school. That’s very unbelievable. The school has only 2 classrooms with 25 students from 1st grade to 6th grade. The bathroom is outside the school with broken doors. There is a facet near by the bathroom but getting running water is always a problem. At noon, we were surprised by our host who served us lunch despite of the condition in their school. I was very touched by their hospitality and friendliness here.
