Today we went to a two-room school house outside of Las
Minas. The school did not have electricity or running water. There were about
30 children of various ages who walk over an hour to attend school here. My
group taught the students about hygiene. With some help from the teachers, we
talked about germs, played a game that taught the kids how germs are spread,
and learned proper hand washing technique with an additional game. The students
were extremely well behaved and respectful. They participated and did what we
asked of them. I hope that they had as much fun as we did! Unlike the previous
two days, I felt like we were able to provide more of a service here and our
visit was helpful to the school. We brought supplies and gave the kids some
toys and stickers that they were excited about. The hospitality was amazing as
well. They didn’t know we were coming, but provided us with a home-cooked
lunch. We are also planning on organizing a shoe drive to provide the students
with better footwear for their long drive. This was a very rewarding day. I
noticed that, although the children do not have much money, they were very
happy. They are more appreciative than children in the US who have almost
everything they could want at their fingertips. It is important to remember to
think about communities like this one when complaining about inconsequential
things that happen in life.
